About Standard Poodles

Standard Poodles have been named one of the top five most adventure-ready dog breeds.

"Extremely smart.......Energetic and prone to boredom if you don't keep them entertained; can be mischievous."

Outside magazine, July 2012 issue

Standard Poodles are not for everyone.

Standard Poodles MUST live in the house with you as a card-carrying family member.  Think “human in a dog suit.” Strong and energetic, they readily adapt to a small apartment or a mansion, though daily exercise is mandatory!  They require - and excel in- obedience training, and socialization with people and dogs outside of your own family is a must.  Because of their frequent leaping and often boisterous play as puppies (up to 2 years old) - this breed is not recommended for the very young, the elderly, or the infirm.  Standard Poodles are extremely sensitive to your moods and do not thrive in a tension-filled environment.

If you envision a dog who.....

....is medium to large, sturdy and athletic yet elegant and graceful

....is essentially non-shedding and hypoallergenic with a non-oily coat

....is lively and playful

....is arguably the brightest and most attentive of all breeds

....is so skilled at reading body language and expression that he often appears telepathic

....excels in competitive dog sports, comes home able to retrieve (or can quickly learn to do so)

....could be trained as your hunting companion

....can become, with proper training, a Canine Good Citizen and exceptional therapy dog

....is (or can be quickly taught to be) polite with strangers and sociable with other animals

....is able to bond with all family members (not just one)

....loves learning; delights in performing skills and tricks

....loves his special time with you

....will attract a crowd of admirers wherever you go

.....THRIVES ON ATTENTION, DAILY EXERCISE, TRAINING

                                      .....and you are committed to.....

......the careful research necessary to find the breeder who fits your requirements

......DAILY EXERCISE, including a walk - rain or shine - and some Poodles demand more than others

......potty training, sleep deprivation, teething (and those needle-sharp puppy teeth)

.....dealing with rowdiness and exuberance, especially when young

......dealing with his creativITY when bored/not exercised/left alone too long

......training and socialization so he’ll grow into the great dog you envisioned

......understanding his emotional sensitivity to stress, tension, loud voices

......regular brushing, once-a-week bathing, frequent trips to the groomer

......a lasting relationship with your dog, hopefully for the next 8 to 15 years

........a Standard Poodle may be the perfect dog for you.
